Tesco, the UK's largest private-sector employer, has become the first supermarket to introduce paid "safe leave" for employees experiencing domestic abuse. This initiative provides staff with up to three days of paid leave, which can be used flexibly to address critical needs.
The dedicated leave can be utilized for essential activities such as attending court hearings, securing emergency accommodation, changing home locks, arranging childcare, or separating finances. The program aims to offer crucial support and a pathway for victims to begin rebuilding their lives in a safe environment. Tesco has also implemented training for its managers to help them recognize the signs of domestic abuse among staff.
