Barclays Delays UK Return-to-Office Mandate Amid Staff Backlash

Barclays has revised its mandatory return-to-office policy for its 45,000 UK employees following significant staff opposition. The bank has extended the deadline for staff to be present in the office at least three days a week, with some now able to delay this requirement until 2027, provided they receive permission.

Initially set for October 5th, the stricter attendance rules, which would have required more senior employees to be in the office four days a week, have been softened. The bank has introduced several concessions, including automatic exemptions during school holidays and Christmas, capped in-office requirements for carers and individuals with disabilities, flexible working hours, subsidized meals, and a consolidated payment to offset commuting costs, all to be implemented before March 2027.
