MoD Objects to Windfarms Over Radar Fears; Battery Storage Costs Plummet

The Ministry of Defence has raised objections to at least four planned windfarms in the past year, citing concerns that the rotating blades could interfere with vital radar systems used for detecting military aircraft. One such objection, lodged in late June, warned that a proposed onshore windfarm in County Durham could prevent aircraft from being detected within an RAF Low Flying Area. These objections risk creating a conflict between the Ministry of Defence and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

In parallel, a separate development highlights a significant shift in energy technology costs. Four-hour battery storage systems are now reportedly cheaper to install globally than traditional gas turbines. This economic advantage for battery storage could accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources and reshape energy infrastructure planning worldwide.
