Four Tankers Destroyed by Mines in Strait of Hormuz; Iran Blames Prohibited Route

Four oil tankers have been destroyed in the Strait of Hormuz after striking naval mines, according to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC stated that the vessels had entered a prohibited route when they hit the mines, escalating tensions in the vital shipping lane.

This development follows a period of heightened activity and conflicting signals. Earlier, U.S. officials confirmed "limited strikes" on Iran's Qeshm Island, described as defensive actions targeting surface-to-air missiles. These strikes occurred just hours before crucial U.S. midterm elections and amidst reports of potential diplomatic progress.

Earlier in the week, Iranian officials had indicated openness to peace talks and a potential deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days, contingent on the release of $6 billion in frozen assets.
