A Victorian coroner has delivered a scathing assessment of the role online gambling played in the suicide of 22-year-old Kyle Hudson. The inquest found that the young man's "grip" on online sports betting was the "direct and paramount" cause of his decision to end his life, despite having a supportive network and promising future.
In a separate case, the coroner investigating the death of eight-year-old Elizabeth Struhs highlighted a "lack of curiosity" regarding her family's religious beliefs as a "missed opportunity" to intervene. Elizabeth died from diabetic ketoacidosis after her father stopped administering insulin, a treatment for her type 1 diabetes. The coroner is considering recommendations from Victoria's cults inquiry in light of these findings.
