A significant cybersecurity vulnerability in the widely used PHP programming language has led to a global scramble to update systems, with hackers reportedly exploiting the flaw for days before a patch was released. The critical vulnerabilities, discovered by PHP developers, prompted numerous websites and government services to go offline as a precautionary measure.
Amazon Threat Intelligence reported that their security team detected exploit attempts as early as October 17th, several days before the official patch was made available. This allowed malicious actors a significant head start in potentially compromising vulnerable systems. While UK officials have stated there are "no indications" that government systems have been successfully hacked, approximately 32 government services were taken offline as a precaution.
