Russell Brand took the stand in his criminal trial on Thursday, stating that he has been unable to secure any character witnesses to testify on his behalf. The comedian, who denies all charges of rape and sexual assault, told the court that "no one will touch me with a bargepole." This development comes as the defense began presenting its case.
Earlier in the proceedings, a judge dismissed one indecent assault charge against Brand, replacing it with a count of attempted indecent assault due to insufficient evidence. The court has also heard statements Brand made to police, in which he described leading a "very promiscuous" life and suggested consensual encounters were "unfavourably reframed decades later." His former personal assistant, Helen Berger, previously testified that Brand had an "insane sexual appetite" and that women frequently visited his flat for sex, though he "never seemed happy" afterward.
